Baltra is located to the north of Santa Cruz Island. Baltra Island is exclusively recognised for its airport. Most travellers will, in fact, set foot on Baltra Island when they get off the plane. Baltra is one of the starting points for cruises in the Galapagos archipelago. The island does not have tourist infrastructure or accommodation. This Galapagos island was occupied during the Second World War by the American armed forces who had made it a strategic base. The Ecuadorian army has since taken over the island.
